Life as a paid illustrator

February 21, 2019

We've a professional freelance illustrator in our midst!

Michael has been drawing since he was a small child, and as such has the skills earned through years of practice

I am still learning though and wanting to improve myself more and more, over the past year and half my skills have improved a lot, I'm very much looking forward to my future in the industry.

My experience as a paid illustrator has helped me understand how to work with a client throughout the design process, so beginning with talking to the client a fair bit to figure out what their requirements and vision for the piece is, as well as liaising with them throughout as they may want to change a few things during. The type of illustration work I do is art commissions i.e. full body art, headshots, character reference sheets, landscape art, and a set pricing for each.

I would say this has helped me learn how to work with a client smoothly throughout the process. I show a rough sketch then take it over to a software I use called medi bang paint pro, and then I do another rough digital sketch then show the client ensuring we're on the same page, as they may want me to add or change something. Showing development is a must for a smooth flow!

I keep in contact with my clients a lot, and try to speak in person or over the phone as often I find that can be easier to understand what the client wants versus over text where subtleties and nuances may be lost. Being a freelance illustrator is an ever learning job, and has been teaching me how to understand cash flow, pricing, time management, and how to work on my own. And making something I like to do and turn it into a job! I am still learning though and wanting to improve myself more and more, over the past year and half my skills have improved a lot, I'm very much looking forward to my future in the industry.
